Thomas Is All Booked Up
Read all about one of Thomas Ian Nicholas' favorite pastimes
Thomas' acting resume describes him as, amoung other things, an avid reader. So we figured he was one of those people who devours novels by the bookcase-full, finishing one and moving on to the next without even taking a break. This is pretty much true.
We didn't, however, figure Thom to be the sort who would throw a book, mid-read, at a nearby wall. But that's exactly what he did- repeatedly!- with April Morning, a novel (or a Thomas decribes it, "A stupid book that took me about a week to read because it was so slow") he'd been assigned it at school.
That book and his reaction to it have prompted Thomas to clarify what we see in his fact sheet. "I avidly read good books," he says.
Now that he has set the record striaght, what, in Thomas' estimation, is a good book?
One that has action, intrigue, and, preferably, a splash of science fiction. Cases in point: Jurassic Park and the novel versions of the Star Wars movies. None of those ever hit Thomas' wall, though they did rob him of a little sleep. He read all of them at a time in his life when he had an ongoing case of insomnia. He'd heard reading in bed might help him fall asleep, so he gave it a whirl.
"That works unless it's, like, a really interesting book," he tells us he soon discovered. "The Star Wars trilogy was really exciting, because I like Star Wars a lot."
The result: fun reading, no shut-eye.
Another fun book Thomas loved but would preferably be even less inclined to read before hitting the pillow is Alive. That's the true-life story of a team of soccer players in the 1970s who survived a freak plane crash and had to, um, eat their dead buddies to stay alive.
Much as Thom dug that book, he chose not to see the 1993 movie version, which starred Ethan Hawke as one of the teammate-munching athletes.
"I don't know if I could take all that graphic stuff I read," explains Thomas. "After reading that, you're like, 'I'm never flying again'!"
Yes, but a least his wall was safe from harm.
